Abstract
Purpose: A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled human intervention study involving 62 healthy volunteers was performed to investigate the effect of Sangwhang (Phellinus linteus) mushroom extracts on leukocytes in human.

Materials and Methods: The volunteers were randomly distributed into two groups, one receiving a Sangwhang mushroom extract (3.3 g/day) and the other a placebo by oral administration for 8 weeks. We evaluated change of the number of total WBC, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils by Sangwhang mushroom intake. In addition, we checked the level of SGOT and SGPT after Sangwhang mushroom intake.

Results: In this study, the number of total WBC, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils were not changed by Sangwhang mushroom intake. On the other hand, the level of SGOT and SGPT, as makers of hepatic damage, were not increased by Sangwhang mushroom intake.

Conclusion: This result suggests that administration of Sangwhang mushroom intake may not affected on the number of leukocytes. However, the intake of Sangwhang mushroom extract for 8 weeks may not show hepatic damage in human.
